“I would have the musicians keep playing over and over again till the sound made sense. I worked overtime on that; I worked hours to get it right. If the sound didn't make any sense, then I wouldn't know what to do – I'd be lost! It's instinct that tells me. I have an instinct for music, or a feeling about it, and I'll have my feelings guide my hands.”
-
“I think in terms of emotions. And feelings. So sometimes what I say may not always be clear. But creatively, there's a lot to be said for that way of thinking.”
-
“I have to tell you that J.S. Bach was easily the greatest musical innovator in the history of the world. He was so advanced for his time. There's a spiritual depth to his music. You can listen to it and it's like meditation.”
-
“You say how you feel, and songs don't lie. Songs are the most honest form of human expression there is – there's nothing that lies about a song.”
-
“The idea of taking a song, envisioning the overall sound in my head and then bringing the arrangement to life in the studio – well that gives me satisfaction like nothing else.”
-
“People are part of my music. A lot of my songs are the result of emotional experiences, sadness, pain, joy, and exultation in nature and sunshine and so on – like ‘California Girls’ which was a hymn to youth.”
-
“People have asked me what I would have been if I’d been born in a different time. I think I would have been a classical composer. But not like Mozart, Beethoven, or Tchaikovsky. I would have been like Bach, using counterpoint, layering things. Of all the composers, he’s the one who makes the most sense to me.”
-
“All of us have the privilege of making music that helps and heals — to make music that makes people happier, stronger and kinder. Don't forget: music is God's voice.”
-
“I approach my music-making as an art-form – something pure from the spirit to which I can add dynamics and marketable reality. Music is genuine and healthy and the stimulation I get from molding it and adding dynamics is like nothing on earth.”

Carl Wilson
His talent was very apparent to those of us who had been close to him, so watching him work with the musicians seemed real natural. When I was eight years old, he was teaching me arrangements. It was literally, 'Mom, make Carl sing!’ I learned how to do very complex harmonies and voicings when I was very young, and I learned how to do them quickly so I could go out and play.

He is a master, musically. I am dumbfounded at him. I am in awe of him. I've grown up with him and watched him go through changes, and he is the most vulnerable human being I know. The depth of that guy ... I mean ... he changed the world with his influence. I'm devoting my life to Brian on a musical level, and the rest of the group feels the same way. When Brian plays something for us, we just gape. It gets very emotional.

I love Brian Wilson. We are partners. He’s my cousin by birth and my brother in music. There’s a tremendous amount of personal history between Brian and me – family gatherings, holidays, birthdays, graduation trips, and most importantly, a deep, shared love of the music we created together.

Brian had this unique ability to write a great melody and also arrange some great harmonies and produce some great records, so we had an all-in-one with Brian Wilson. We had, shall we call it … the jackpot.

Brian was beyond the definition of a gifted guy. People often describe him as a genius, but I don’t like to say he was a genius, because that’s actually not as high as it should be. There’s probably some unwritten term, that’s how good he was. Working with Brian, I learned so much.
