Legendary Musician and Co-Founder of the Beach Boys, Brian Wilson, Partners with Change Direction

WASHINGTON, D.C., September 17, 2015 – The Campaign to Change Direction, a national initiative to change the culture of mental health in America, today announced a new partnership with legendary musician and co-founder of the Beach Boys Brian Wilson.

Launched in March of this year, the Campaign to Change Direction is a national initiative to broaden our understanding of mental health by encouraging all Americans to take a pledge to learn the Five Signs of emotional suffering and to care for their mental well-being just as they do their physical well-being.

“My wife, Melinda, and I are very excited to be a part of this important campaign, not only to bring awareness to the mental health issues faced by millions of Americans, but also to encourage everyone to learn the Five Signs of emotional suffering,” said Brian Wilson. “It’s time for us to bring the conversation of mental health in America out of the shadows, and the Campaign to Change Direction is leading the way.”

As part of this new partnership, Mr. Wilson will perform a concert on November 4 at the Hyatt Regency Tysons Corner Center. Proceeds from the event will benefit Give an Hour, a national nonprofit organization providing free mental health services to the military and veteran community, and the lead organization behind the Change Direction campaign. Information about the concert and where to purchase tickets can be found at www.ChangeDirection.org/BrianWilson

Change Direction is proud to work not only with Mr. and Mrs. Wilson but also with the producers and cast members of Love & Mercy, a biographical film dramatizing Mr. Wilson's life and love story with his wife. Together they hope to inspire even more Americans to take the pledge to learn the Five Signs of emotional suffering.

“Give an Hour is thrilled to welcome Brian and Melinda as new partners and showcase Love & Mercy as we work to change the direction of mental health in our nation,” said Dr. Barbara Van Dahlen, founder and president of Give an Hour. “By creating a shared mission to educate Americans about the signs of emotional suffering and using different tools and mediums to reach our audience, we can encourage awareness, compassion, and action to change the national conversation about mental health.”

Joining Mr. Wilson at the announcement, made today at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., was his wife, Melinda Wilson; actor Paul Dano, who portrays a young Brian Wilson in the film; and the film's acclaimed director/producer Bill Pohlad – all of whom participated in a panel discussion on how

Hollywood can help change America’s attitude toward mental health. The panel was moderated by former West Wing star Melissa Fitzgerald, now Senior Director of Justice for Vets.

About Change Direction

The Campaign to Change Direction, a national initiative to change the culture of mental health in America, encourages Americans to care for their mental well-being just as they do their physical well-being. Led by Give an Hour, a national nonprofit organization providing free mental health services to the military and veteran community, Change Direction addresses common barriers to understanding mental health and raises awareness about the Five Signs that may indicate someone is suffering emotionally and needs help: change in personality, agitation, withdrawal, decline in personal care, and hopelessness.

More than 150 partner organizations across the United States are using their unique skills and opportunities to spread awareness; this collective impact effort will reach more than 30 million Americans in the next five years. Organizations and individuals who are interested in learning more or making a pledge can visit www.changedirection.org

About Brian Wilson

One of the world’s legendary musical figures, Brian Wilson was the primary composer for the Beach Boys and was responsible for the release of a slew of hit singles during the early 1960s, creating music that would come to epitomize a generation. The Beach Boys released three albums in 1963 alone: Surfin' U.S.A., Surfer Girl, and Little Deuce Coupe, all of which cracked the Top 10. In 1966 they went on to release the seminal album Pet Sounds, one of the most treasured albums of all time. After years of seclusion and battling mental illness, Mr. Wilson revitalized his career with the release of several hugely successful solo albums including Brian Wilson Presents SMiLE, his long-awaited masterpiece, and, most recently, his album No Pier Pressure. He is currently the subject of a critically acclaimed biopic, Love & Mercy, which is based on his contributions to the music industry as a musical genius as well as the mental health struggles he has overcome. One of the most influential musicians and songwriters in Rock and Roll history, Brian Wilson has earned numerous awards and honors including membership in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriters Hall of Fame, two Grammy’s, and the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors for lifetime contribution to the performing arts.

About "Love & Mercy"

The critically acclaimed film Love & Mercy defies conventional storytelling with the dual story line of Brian Wilson, the singer, songwriter, and leader of the Beach Boys. Set against two distinct eras in Brian's lengthy musical career, the film intimately examines his personal voyage from the period during which he shapes the early sounds of the Beach Boys to the time he meets his wife, Melinda. Golden Globe® nominee John Cusack (Best Actor, High Fidelity, 2001), in “one of the best performances of his career” (Hollywood Reporter), stars alongside Paul Dano (Little Miss Sunshine, Looper) as the troubled musical genius Brian in two pivotal stages of his life—the 1960s, at the peak of the Beach Boys' fame, and the 1980s, as Brian reclaims his life after a mental breakdown. They are joined by Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games franchise) as Melinda Wilson and two-time Golden Globe® winner Paul Giamatti (Best Actor, Barney’s Version, 2011; Best Actor, John Adams, 2009). Mr. Pohlad makes his return to directing with the feature film Love & Mercy, which centers on Brian Wilson, the mercurial singer, songwriter, and leader of the Beach Boys. The film paints an unconventional portrait of the artist by interweaving seminal moments in his life, from his artistic genius to his profound struggles, and the love that keeps him alive. Love & Mercy, which Mr. Pohlad also produced under the River Road banner, stars John Cusack, Paul Dano, Elizabeth Banks, and Paul Giamatti. It opened to rave reviews and is considered among the top films of 2015 so far.

Having started out as a writer/director in the late 1980s, Mr. Pohlad has spent most of the last fifteen years producing such acclaimed titles as the Academy Award®–winning Best Picture Twelve Years a Slave, Jean-Marc Vallee's Wild, Terrence Malick's The Tree of Life, and Sean Penn's Into the Wild.

He later signed on the Paul Thomas Anderson historical drama, “There Will Be Blood,” for which he received a BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Dano also lent his voice to the big-screen computer-animated adaptation of the classic children's book, “Where the Wild Things Are,” voicing the main character of Alexander. Paul also appeared in the Oscar nominated film “12 Years a Slave” before starring in “Love & Mercy” as a young Brian Wilson.

"Music from Love & Mercy" official soundtrack to Lionsgate/Roadside Attractions/River Road's acclaimed Brian Wilson biopic, to be released on CD this Friday.

Brian Wilson to Make Special Barnes & Noble In-Store Appearance Tomorrow in McLean, VA

Hollywood, California – September 16, 2015 – ‘Music From LOVE & MERCY,’ the official soundtrack to Lionsgate/Roadside Attractions/River Road’s acclaimed Brian Wilson biopic starring John Cusack and Paul Dano, will be released on CD this Friday by Capitol Records. Tomorrow (Thursday, September 17), from 5:30pm to 7pm EDT, Brian Wilson will make a special in-store appearance at Barnes & Noble Tysons Corner Mall in McLean, Virginia to autograph copies of the ‘Music From LOVE & MERCY’ CD and the ‘LOVE & MERCY’ film DVD, as well as CD and vinyl LP copies of his acclaimed studio album, ‘No Pier Pressure,’ released by Capitol in April.

Produced by Wilson, the film’s Oscar®-winning score composer Atticus Ross, and the film’s producer and director, Bill Pohlad, ‘Music From LOVE & MERCY’’s 13 tracks include “One Kind of Love,” a ballad written and recorded by Brian Wilson specifically for the film, original Beach Boys classics, Paul Dano’s stirring performance of “God Only Knows” from the film, and original score pieces by Ross. The soundtrack is also available for download purchase from major digital music retailers.

“Atticus’ musical work with the film was absolutely brilliant,” says Wilson. “Through the score he was able to tastefully capture some of the most joyful and dark moments of my life.”

“It was a great privilege to be part of the team that brought ‘LOVE & MERCY to life,” says Ross. “Beyond the beautiful and tragic events in Brian Wilson's life, the film is an uncompromising exploration into the creative process of undoubtedly one of the most inventive and sophisticated musical creators to have ever recorded. Bill Pohlad's unique vision celebrates that process with an insight and energy that inspired us all to reach for the best of our own creative abilities. In terms of the musical story telling it seemed essential to keep Brian ever-present and it's a testament to both his generosity and ongoing imagination that he allowed unprecedented access to his archive to achieve that goal.”

“Mr. Pohlad's deft narrative sense and careful visual style are complemented by the work of  Atticus Ross, whose sonic collages – ‘score’ doesn't quite do justice to his achievement – take us deeper inside a musical mind than we might have thought possible. ‘LOVE & MERCY’ doesn't claim to solve the mystery of Brian Wilson, but it succeeds beyond all expectation in making you hear where he was coming from.” – A.O. Scott, The New York Times (June 4, 2015)

Hailed by critics as a triumph of the biopic film genre, ‘LOVE & MERCY’ presents an unconventional portrait of Wilson, the legendary singer, songwriter, producer and co-founder of one of the world’s most successful and beloved bands of all-time, The Beach Boys. Set against the era-defining catalog of Wilson’s music, the film intimately examines the personal voyage and ultimate salvation of the icon, whose success came at extraordinary personal cost. ‘LOVE & MERCY’ stars Cusack and Dano as Wilson at different points of his life and career, with co-stars Paul Giamatti as Dr. Eugene Landy and Elizabeth Banks as Wilson’s wife, Melinda.

Brian Wilson is one of popular music’s most deeply revered figures, a legendary writer, producer, arranger and performer of some of the most cherished music in pop music history. For more than half a century, fans have marveled at the sheer beauty of the music that springs forth from his imagination into glorious song. Wilson brings this ingenious vision to his own compositions, as well as to those for which he has collaborated, weaving a lush, vibrant tapestry of intricately nuanced vocal harmonies and instrumental arrangements for himself, his bandmates and others.

Wilson began his career as a teenaged founding member of The Beach Boys, who signed with Capitol Records in July 1962 and released their first album, Surfin’ Safari, that same year. The band’s initial surf-rock focus was soon broadened to include other themes, and 1966’s Pet Sounds is universally hailed as one of the greatest albums of all time.  Wilson’s innovative vocal and instrumental arrangements for major hits including “I Get Around,” “California Girls,” “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “God Only Knows,” and the No. 1 smash “Good Vibrations” made The Beach Boys America’s preeminent band of the 1960s.

Wilson has also achieved great solo success with 11 of his own albums to date, including his acclaimed ‘No Pier Pressure,’ released by Capitol Records in April. Wilson’s 2004 completion of an album he first began recording in the 1960s, Brian Wilson Presents… SMiLE, earned his first GRAMMY® for a recording, which was followed by his second GRAMMY® win for producing The Beach Boys’ universally hailed 2011 release, The SMiLE Sessions. With his own band, Wilson has performed major, sold-out international tours in recent years, and he celebrated The Beach Boys’ 50th anniversary in 2012 with an international tour and acclaimed studio album, That’s Why God Made The Radio.

Brian Wilson is a Kennedy Center Honors recipient, a Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee, and a U.K. Music Hall of Fame inductee.  As a member of The Beach Boys, Wilson was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 and honored with The Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001.

'Love & Mercy' To Raise Awareness For Music Education By Supporting National Nonprofit, Little Kids Rock

Beach Boys co-founder and subject of film debuts new music video and re-recording of “Love & Mercy” with local students who participate in Little Kids Rock’s free popular music program at underserved public schools

LOS ANGELES, CA – May 27, 2015 – In conjunction with the release of the Brian Wilson biopic, Love & Mercy, the Beach Boys co-founder has re-recorded the film’s title track with local public school students who benefit from Little Kids Rock’s free Modern Band music program. See the “Love & Mercy” music video below.

Little Kids Rock is the nation’s leading nonprofit provider of popular music instruction, instruments and curricula to nearly 1300 public schools in 30 cities, having served more than 400,000 children since 2002 with weekly music lessons rooted in popular music genres like rock, funk, pop, reggae and others.

“As the movie Love & Mercy shows, music had a transformational impact on my life,” says Brian Wilson. “It is such an honor and a pleasure to work with Little Kids Rock again and help them bring the lifelong gift of music into the lives of children in schools who may otherwise not have access.”

Wilson performed at Little Kids Rock’s annual benefit event in New York City in 2013.

ABOUT LITTLE KIDS ROCK
Little Kids Rock is a national nonprofit that is dedicated to unlocking children’s inner music-makers by revitalizing music education programming in public schools. The organization partners with school districts to train public school teachers to run its innovative Modern Band curriculum and donates all of the accompanying instruments and resources necessary to teach popular music. Little Kids Rock started as a schoolteacher’s vision to give his students access to music education that is relevant to them while diminishing budgets for the arts made that more and more difficult to do. What began as a single after-school guitar class has since exploded into a national movement that is bringing free, weekly music lessons to more than 135,000 public school children due to the efforts of nearly 1,200 teachers nationwide. To date, Little Kids Rock has served over 325,000 students. More info at www.littlekidsrock.org.

Brian Announces UK Arena Tour for September 2015

Legendary performer, founding member of The Beach Boys and one of the world’s most revered figures within popular music, Brian Wilson has announced that he will be touring arenas across the UK this September. Already receiving praise for his upcoming ‘No Pier Pressure’ album out on April 6th, Brian will be bringing the sound of California to British shores for a limited run of shows and will be bringing classic rockers America and Scottish indie innovator Edwyn Collins with him to arenas in the UK.

For the eight UK shows Brian will be joined by fellow Beach Boys Al Jardine and Blondie Chaplin. Also on the bill are Classic Rock favourites, America. Marking their 45th anniversary after meeting at high school in London in the 1960s and going on to become a household name with hits like their #1 single ‘A Horse With No Name’ and ‘I Need You’. The individual band member’s composite sound of melodic pop rock and elements of folk, jazz and Latin inspired rhythms and image fuelled lyricism would go beyond their biggest hits and earn them a huge loyal following and six certified gold and/or platinum albums.

Also on the tour will be Edwyn Collins, one of the indie genre’s founding musicians and an ingenious songwriter, much like Brian himself. Edwyn was founding a member of the punk-funk hybrid band Orange Juice, who rose to prominence in the 80s before he embarked on a solo career. Honing this new sound Edwyn went on to have a worldwide smash with 1995 hit ‘A Girl Like You’, and after another decade and recovery from serious illness Edwyn became recognized as a great musician with the Ivor Novello Inspiration Award.

Tickets for Brian Fest, the California festival celebrating the music of Brian Wilson at the end of March, sold out in 5 minutes after going on sale. Brian is also touring the US in the summer with the sugar man himself, Rodriguez, before crossing the Atlantic.

Tickets are available from 9am on Friday, March 27th

This will include many of the countless hits that he wrote and produced for one of pop music’s most defining bands, The Beach Boys, as well as the amazing arsenal of beautiful songs from his own 11 solo albums. Brian’s latest album ‘No Pier Pressure’, released April 6th, is arguably one of his biggest yet, featuring collaborations with some of his fellow Beach Boys, Kacey Musgraves, fun.’s Nate Ruess, Zooey Deschanel and M.Wards’ She & Him and Capital Cities’ Sebu Simonian to name but a few. Wilson started working on the new songs during The Beach Boys’ 50th anniversary activities in 2012, the same year in which Brian was awarded a GRAMMY® for the band’s long-awaited ‘SMiLE Sessions’ album. ‘No Pier Pressure’ was a venture for Brian to find talented young vocalists who have in turn been influenced by his work and to have them contribute to his visionary compositions.

"The Wrecking Crew" now available in iTunes and theaters

THE WRECKING CREW is a documentary film produced and directed by Denny Tedesco, son of legendary late Wrecking Crew guitarist Tommy Tedesco. The film tells the story of the unsung musicians that provided the backbeat, the bottom and the swinging melody that drove many of the number one hits of the 1960’s. It didn’t matter if it was Nat “King” Cole, Frank Sinatra, Nancy Sinatra, The Monkees, The Byrds or The Beach Boys, these dedicated musicians brought the flair and musicianship that made the American “west coast sound” a dominant cultural force around the world. The film is a fun and moving tribute from Denny to his father and to the music, the times and to the secret star-making machine known only as “The Wrecking Crew."The movie is now available on iTunes and in select theaters.

Following is a note from director Denny Tedesco:

Growing up in the 60s, there was no way to miss hearing the sound of the Beach Boys.  Not only did they influence the music of the day and the music business in Los Angeles, they also influenced music all over the world.

My father and guitarist,  Tommy Tedesco was one of the lucky ones that worked with Brian and the boys. When Brian started using some of the session players on their albums, it allowed him to take his music in another direction. But he also knew that when he brought in Hal Blaine, Ray Pohlman, Don Randi, Carol Kaye, my Dad and many of the other players he would bring the best out of them and they always looked forward to those recording dates.

This Friday March 13th, the story of the session players who came to be known as “The Wrecking Crew" will finally be released.  This film wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for the incredible support from Brian and the other artists in the film; Nancy Sinatra, Jimmy Webb, Herb Alpert, Cher, Roger McGuinn, Glen Campbell, Leon Russell as well as all the session players who were interviewed.

It’s also the fans of the music that have kept this film alive over the last 19 years and for that I am forever grateful. It shows how timeless the music still is today

Nothing can make a son more proud than hearing Brian Wilson talk about your father and his friends with such love and respect. I know it was mutual.  The film will be released in theaters starting tomorrow around the United States. It will also be released on ITUNES and Video on Demand.  Watch it with friends and have a great time!

Wilson has also achieved great solo success with 10 of his own albums released to date, including his acclaimed 2004 completion of an album he first began recording in the ‘60s, Brian Wilson Presents… SMiLE.  The album earned Wilson his first GRAMMY® for a recording, which was followed by his second GRAMMY® win for producing The Beach Boys’ acclaimed 2011 release, The SMiLE Sessions. With his own band, Wilson has performed major, sold-out SMiLE and Pet Sounds tours in recent years, and with The Beach Boys, he celebrated the iconic band’s 50th anniversary in 2012 with a major international tour and acclaimed studio album, That’s Why God Made The Radio.

Brian Wilson's "No Pier Pressure" Album Available Now for PreOrder with Instant Download of Lead Track, "The Right Time"

Hollywood, California – February 17, 2015 – Music legend Brian Wilson’s new album, No Pier Pressure, is now available for preorder across all of its physical and digital configurations. The album will be released April 7 in standard 13-track and deluxe 16-track editions, each in CD and digital formats, as well as a 16-track 2LP edition on 180-gram vinyl. No Pier Pressure’s digital preorder provides an instant download of its lead track, “The Right Time,” featuring vocals by Wilson and Al Jardine, and guitar by David Marks.  The new music video for “The Right Time” will premiere on Yahoo Music this Thursday, February 19.

For No Pier Pressure, his 11th solo studio album, Wilson has returned to Capitol Records, his original label home with The Beach Boys.  Wilson reunited with longtime collaborator Joe Thomas, and was joined at Hollywood’s Ocean Way Studios by talented musicians he personally invited to record with him, including his former Beach Boys bandmates Al Jardine, David Marks and Blondie Chaplin, as well as Kacey Musgraves, fun.’s Nate Ruess, She & Him’s Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward, Peter Hollens, Capital Cities’ Sebu Simonian, and trumpet master Mark Isham, as well as session all-stars Don Was, Jim Keltner, Dean Parks, and Kenny Aronoff.  Members of Wilson’s longtime touring band, including Scott Bennett, Paul Mertens, Darian Sahanaja, and Probyn Gregory also participated in the sessions, along with Matt Jardine, son of Al Jardine, and former bandmate Jeffrey Foskett.

Camped out at Ocean Way, Wilson took a fluid, woodshedding approach to the recording process, deftly tailoring the vocal and instrumental parts and arrangements to each participant.  Wilson worked to hone the arrangements, often assembling pieces from various takes, a signature style of recording he has enjoyed since his earliest recording sessions.  In fact, several of the songs were written during the recording process.

Hollywood, California – January 29, 2015 – He is one of popular music’s most deeply revered figures, a legendary writer, producer, arranger and performer of some of the most cherished music in pop music history. Indeed, it is no exaggeration to call Brian Wilson one of the most gifted and influential composers of the past 50 years. For the release of his 11th solo studio album, titled No Pier Pressure, Wilson has returned to Capitol Records, his original label home with The Beach Boys.  The album will be released April 7 in standard 13-track and deluxe 16-track editions, each available on CD and digitally, as well as a 16-track 2LP edition on 180-gram vinyl.

For the No Pier Pressure sessions, Brian Wilson reunited with longtime collaborator Joe Thomas, with whom he co-produced The Beach Boys’ No. 3 Billboard album That’s Why God Made The Radio for the iconic band’s 50th anniversary reunion in 2012.  In addition, Wilson was  joined at Hollywood’s Ocean Way Studios by talented musicians he personally invited to record with him, including his former Beach Boys bandmates Al Jardine, David Marks and Blondie Chaplin, as well as Kacey Musgraves, fun.’s Nate Ruess, She & Him’s Zooey Deschanel and M. Wilson and Thomas began collaborating on the new songs during The Beach Boys’ whirlwind 50th anniversary activities throughout 2012, a banner year for the band which also included a GRAMMY® Award win for Brian for The Beach Boys’ long-awaited SMiLE Sessions release.  He told family, friends, and journalists around the world that he looked forward to returning to the studio when he got back home to California.

Always most inspired when creativity is given time and space to freely flow, Wilson initially envisioned the sessions for his new album with The Beach Boys in mind, but that was not to be.  Wanting to find the right voices to complete his vision, Wilson saw an opportunity to finally become hip with his kids and recruited some amazing young vocalists who have been inspired by his music to do the job.

Throughout his iconic career, Wilson has brought ingenious vision to his own compositions, as well as to those for which he has collaborated, weaving a lush, vibrant tapestry of intricately nuanced vocal harmonies and instrumental arrangements for himself, his bandmates and others.  For more than 50 years, fans have marveled at the sheer beauty of the music that springs forth from Wilson’s imagination into glorious song.

Brian Wilson brings his iconic vocals to Tulsa December 4

The Beach Boys co-founder to perform at The Joint inside Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa

TULSA, Okla. – Legendary Beach Boys co-founder Brian Wilson is set to perform at The Joint inside Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa on Dec. 4.

Tickets start at $60 and go on sale Oct. 30.

Known as one of the most influential composers of the last century, Wilson’s musical journey began as co-founder of The Beach Boys.

The Beach Boys quickly became the rock ‘n’ roll voice of Southern California, with their perfect harmonies and original songs about surfing, beaches, hot rods and surfer girls.

Wilson was barely out of his teens when he began to produce nine consecutive “gold” albums that included such classics as “Surfer Girl,” “In My Room,” “I Get Around,” “Don’t Worry Baby,” “Fun, Fun, Fun,” “Help me, Rhonda” and “California Girls,” just to list a few of the more than two dozen Top 40 hits Wilson co-wrote, produced and performed with The Beach Boys.

The band continued to conquer the airwaves throughout the 90s with more than 30 chart-topping albums. The release of the band’s eleventh album, “Pet Sounds,” garnered enormous worldwide acclaim by critics and musicians alike and featured top hits like “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “God Only Knows” and “Sloop John B.”

Along with substantial success with The Beach Boys, Wilson has encountered his own success in his solo career.

In 1988, Wilson made his solo debut with the self-titled album “Brian Wilson,” which featured “Love and Mercy,” “There’s So Many” and “Baby Let Your Hair Grow Long.” Wilson continued to release hit albums and in 1999 conquered his legendary stage-fright by going on his first solo tour. The following year, Wilson began a series of “Dreams Come True” events when he kicked off his acclaimed “Pet Sounds” symphonic tour, which reviewers described as “the best concert ever.”

In 2012, the band reunited for the 50th anniversary reunion tour along with the release of the album “That’s Why God Made the Radio.”

Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tulsa is located off Interstate 44 at exit 240A. Ticket prices and information on upcoming shows are available online in The Joint section of www.hardrockcasinotulsa.com or by calling (918) 384-ROCK. The Joint box office is open from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. – 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. All guests must be 21 years of age or older.
